Aftec

Aftec Advanced Competition Extractors for 1911 & 2011 Pistols

The standard 1911 extractor is one of John Browning's few compromises — a piece of spring steel bent to create tension, which works fine at 45 ACP pressures but gradually loses its tune under the higher-pressure loads used in competition 9mm, .38 Super Comp, and .40 S&W. The result is a walking extractor: reliable at the start of a match, inconsistent by the end. The Aftec Advanced Competition Extractor eliminates this problem entirely.

How the Aftec Works

Instead of relying on bent spring steel for tension, the Aftec uses two coil slave springs that push on the side of the extractor body independently of the extractor's own steel. Tension is set by the springs, not by the extractor bend — which means it doesn't walk, doesn't need to be re-tuned after a high round count, and isn't affected by heat or repeated cycling. Once set up properly, extractor-related extraction and feed failures become a non-issue.

The Aftec was endorsed and used by Todd Jarrett, USPSA World Champion and one of the most respected competition shooting coaches in the country. It's been a staple of 1911 and 2011 competition builds for decades.

Calibers Available

  • 9mm / .38 Super Comp / .38 TJ — same extractor for 9x19 and .38 Super Comp; note: .38 Super (standard, not Comp) uses a different hook due to the larger rim — order accordingly
  • .40 S&W / 10mm — same extractor for both calibers
  • .45 ACP

Compatibility

Fits 1911 and 2011 pattern pistols including Springfield Armory, STI, SVI, Kimber (without external extractor), and similar. Will not work in Colt Series 80 pistols or Para Ordnance pistols. May require fitting — these are not drop-in for all platforms. Modification of the slide may be necessary if you want to blend the extractor flush with the back of the slide. Each package includes the extractor, spring retaining cap, and four replacement springs.

Installation Note

The Aftec is not a drop-in part for all 1911/2011 builds. Fitting by a qualified gunsmith is recommended, particularly for the slide tunnel, firing pin stop clearance, and barrel timing. Once fitted and tuned, start with one spring engaged to allow break-in, then add the second spring for full tension. Keep the extractor tunnel clean for consistent performance.
