JP-5™ Ultralight Bolt Carrier by JP Enterprises
The JP-5™ Ultralight Bolt Carrier is a pure race gun upgrade for the leading PCC platform, coming in 25% lighter than the standard steel JP-5™ bolt carrier for the fastest possible cycling. This direct drop-in upgrade carrier is engineered to strip reciprocating mass out of your operating system. The result is a flatter-shooting, faster-cycling rifle that you can tune precisely to your ammunition and your shooting style, ready in minutes.
The Ultralight Bolt Carrier weighs in at 7.1 oz. as compared to the 9.4 oz. of the standard steel carrier—a 25% reduction in reciprocating mass you feel from the first pull of the trigger.
Specialized Construction
The Ultralight Bolt Carrier takes the best of all worlds with a multi-material construction:
- Nitride 416 Stainless provides a durable shuttle for the critical, high-wear/high-impact surfaces
- Anodized 7075 Aluminum saves on weight wherever possible while staying isolated from wear and impact
- Tungsten Powder is sealed between the steel and aluminum components, adding mobile mass to help tune the carrier’s movement and reduce bolt bounce
The result is a carrier that sheds overall weight without compromising the integrity of its hardest-working surfaces or the way its mass carries through the stroke.
Component Compatibility
This is a direct drop-in replacement bolt carrier compatible with all existing JP-5™ rifles and components, including the original bolt, firing pin, and roller retention hardware.
A Note on Power Factor
Because operating dynamics change with reduced mass, your measured power factor can shift when running the same ammunition through the Ultralight Bolt Carrier versus the standard carrier. If you load to a specific power factor, we recommend re-checking your load once you are running the Ultralight Bolt Carrier.
Operating System Tuning with the Ultralight Bolt Carrier
The Ultralight Bolt Carrier represents a significant change to the operating system of the JP-5™. Because it reduces operating mass, the bolt cycles faster. This means the rifle will need to be re-tuned to reach its ideal operating window where recoil is minimized while ensuring the carrier assembly still carries enough velocity to cycle fully and eject reliably. This tuning comes primarily in adjustment of the lock piece and the Silent Captured Spring.
Lock Piece
The most useful way to think about your lock piece is like an adjustable gas block, but it’s important to think of it as adjusting overall energy—not too much, not too little—rather than about hitting a specific power factor.
To start your tuning, we recommend using a 60° lock piece with the original steel SCS weights (see below) and testing lower angles from there with your ammo of choice. The Ultralight Bolt Carrier is compatible with all JP-5™ lock pieces, including the new 40° and 45° lock pieces that are only compatible with this new carrier.
A dedicated lock piece conversion guide is being published to help you match your load to the right lock piece and SCS configuration. As a tuning benchmark, the rifle should eject consistently at least three feet across a minimum of 50 rounds and shoot to lock back on the last round. This is a reliable sign that your operating system is properly tuned. To ensure that your ejection pattern is accurate, you may need to remove your optic if the ejected brass is deflecting off it.
Silent Captured Spring
The Ultralight Bolt Carrier significantly widens your SCS tuning window thanks to the internal tungsten powder, which provides sufficient buffering. The result is that the weights on the SCS are no longer strictly required to minimize bolt bounce, so the operating mass can be reduced further.
With this carrier, you can run the traditional steel weights, run no weights at all, or our new aluminum SCS weights (coming soon). Aluminum weights serve as a middle ground: they take the edge off the sharper feel of a weightless setup without slowing the bolt as much as steel does. The right configuration comes down to your ammunition and personal preference:
- Steel weights remain the right choice for full-power and hotter loads (such as Sellier & Bellot).
- No weights delivers the sharpest, fastest impulse.
- Aluminum weights (coming soon) offer a balance of the above for shooters who want to soften the impulse without fully committing to steel.
- Tungsten weights may still function depending on your configuration, but are not recommended with the Ultralight Bolt Carrier.
Changing weights is simple and is covered here. It is important to run either two weights with O-rings or no weights at all on the SCS. Do not run a single mass of any material as this will eventually break or dislodge the SCS snap ring from its groove.
To tune the overall feel of the cycle, note that the Ultralight Bolt Carrier will yield a lighter, snappier recoil impulse and noticeably less muzzle rise. This minimizes vertical movement, keeping your sights flatter and your follow-up shots faster. For a softer, more deliberate impulse, add weight to the SCS to tune the feel back toward that of the standard carrier.
If you experience a failure to feed, we recommend reconfiguring your SCS with the JPSCS-SPRING15-90 spring.
Maintenance and Durability
The Ultralight Bolt Carrier is designed to run wet. Apply a coat of oil to all contact points on the carrier, including the roller and the lock piece. There is no need to soak the carrier; a thorough coating of every contact surface is what keeps it running its best.
The Ultralight Bolt Carrier has undergone extensive safety testing, including with hotter loads. Its multi-material construction is engineered for a safe and long service life, and our extensive testing to date has shown reliable function and nothing beyond cosmetic wear when tuned properly.
